Season Ends with Banquet at Swift House Inn
After our delicious brunch, we celebrated our Academic All-Nescac award winners, so congrats again to Ali, Beth, Maggie, El, Corley and Jane!
We also celebrated our "rookies" with old school varsity letters! I've mentioned this in the past, but Chellsa made a letter jacket with hers, and one former alum made a Christmas stocking with her letter on it! Here are our freshman with their Middlebury M's:Kelly, Manya, Laney, Addie, and Lucy.
We also recognized our seniors. The team celebrates and honors our seniors on Senior Weekend during the season and had already given them these really cool pillows with pictures from their four years, which has become a fabulous tradition. Still a fun tradition, but not quite as sleek as that, the coaching staff always gives the seniors a fleece blanket with their number on it and one of their old practice jerseys! This year, the captains were all three seniors, so we also made them a Mug with pictures of each of them on it, which was fun, especially given our collective love our Dunkin Donuts coffee! (I have come to realize that not everyone actually likes the coffee, but we all still enjoy the pre-game tradition!) You can always use another vessel in which to put coffee!
We also had three awards that the team voted on. First was the Yellow Jersey Award, given to the person who gave the most consistent effort in practice on a daily basis throughout the season. This award went to Kelly Ferrero! Next we had the MCVB Spirit Award, which goes to the person who most consistently demonstrated the positive spirit of Middlebury Volleyball, thus encouraging others and bringing positivity in practice and games, regardless of how things were going. This went to Beth Neal (for the 3rd year in a row, I might add!) Our final award was for Panther Pride. This award is given to the person who is the best teammate; someone who makes those around her better by holding themselves and their teammates accountable to a high standard of excellence, while also being supportive and understanding. They must also live our mantra of "It's All About the Team!" This award went to Jaime Donnelly! These three were very deserving of these awards, and it's a nice tribute to them to be voted for these awards by their teammates.
We also had a special celebration on this day because it was Corley's Birthday!! My daughter Lois helped me make a cake, and she decorated it because that's just not in my skill set, so a special HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Corley as well!
Swift House does a fabulous job with our Brunch. It's a picturesque country Inn with wonderful food!! Again, I want to thank our parent group for helping us keep this tradition alive, and we had a full group there with all of our coaches buy one, and also our Faculty Affiliate with her daughter! We were just missing Jesse, who helped us out as a volunteer coach this year, as well as our Trainer, Bethany, who couldn't make it either. It was another really fun year, and we're already excited about next year. The newbies have now gotten in ED, but we can't make that public yet to follow the rules, but although we're sad to say good bye to our seniors, we're happy to welcome new players for next year. The cycle of teams keeps going!
Happy New Year, and may 2020 bring you all health and happiness!!

Banquet Concludes 2014 Season
We celebrated our Season with a final dinner at the Swift House Inn last night. What a lovely place, and we want a special THANK YOU to go out to the Underbrinks and the Kolodkas for sponsoring this lovely event. We'd never have a dinner like that without you, so we all really appreciate your generosity and thoughtfulness. In a fashion typical of our team, we don't do a big, formal banquet celebration with speeches and presentations, but instead, just get together for a wonderful meal, and laughs and enjoy each other's company. Pat Manley, our Faculty Affiliate, and Judd Mackey, our trainer joined us as they're both very important members of our team as well as the players and coaches.
We do have a few team awards that the team votes on, old-school Varsity Letters for the freshmen, and the official MIDD Certificate of Participation for everyone, so we hand those out so everyone has a token of appreciation for their efforts during the season. I think Lizzy mentioned that she actually put her varsity M on a quilt or blanket, which is a great idea. Then, I thank the captains for their special contributions. I always recognize our seniors for FOUR wonderful years. Every year I get them a navy fleece blanket with Middlebury and their # on it so as they cuddle up on their couch next year in whatever part of the country they end up in, they can reminisce about the "good ole days" playing MCVB! It's a pretty quick award presentation, but hopefully a special one nonetheless.
The captains and team gave the "adults" a cool mug with the team picture on it, and some fun food items for Meg, in addition to a very special Picture Book for the coaches of a snapshot of the season, and a CD of the warm-up music. THANK YOU for those nice gifts!!
Here are the results from our Team Awards:
Off-Court Contribution: Kathryn Haderlein
On-Court Contribution: Lizzy Reed
Most Improved: Eliana Schaefer
Spirit Award: Kathryn Haderlein (and Cowie)!
The Captains for 2015: Kathryn, Katie, and Hannah
Congratulations to everyone, and thank you for a wonderful Season!!
Piper Competes in Senior Classic
Piper finished her senior career at MIDD by competing in the Senior Classic Event held at The University of Massachusetts at Boston yesterday. Lizzy and Olivia were also honored by the nomination, but were unable to attend the actual event. There were fun competitions and drills, and the event concluded with match play of a couple of sets. I believe Piper's team won both sets, thanks in part to not only Piper's front row play, but she served (maybe for the first time in her career during a match??) and aced them on a short serve, and threw them off by mixing in deep serves--all that serve and chase paid off, huh, Piper! :)
She represented NESCAC well as most other players in attendance were from other Conferences. Way to go, Piper. We also had a nice time on the drive just chatting, which was really fun. After picking her up at 5:30 am, I dropped her off at 5pm so she'd have time to shower and change for our Banquet that night at 6pm, so it was a full day, especially hearing that she'd been in the lab until wee hours the previous night (or really that morning), and had been up at 5:00 am a couple other times that week babysitting for another coach! (She left the Banquet and headed back to the lab to finish up more work on her cores for her Thesis, too. LONG days right now for everyone...) Good luck to everyone on their finals!

Hannah, Becca, and Lizzy Honored by NESCAC
The All-NESCAC awards came out today, and we had some very nice inclusions. Hannah was named to the All-NESCAC 2nd team. This is her first time receiving this honor. She was in the top 2 in the Conference all season for assists/set, and was consistently on the leader board for service aces as well. Hannah orchestrated our offense, and leads the team not only by dishing out the sets, but with her positive energy, enthusiasm, and game sense. Nice job, Hannah!Becca received the Co-Rookie of the Year award, along with a freshman from Amherst, which is a very nice honor, especially after getting a late start on an already short season! She is the 5th Panther to receive this honor, but none others did it starting the season off with mono. After sitting on the sidelines for almost a month, she jumped in to practice and games and immediately impacted our team, albeit a bit red-faced and winded to start out. She quickly jumped onto the leader board for NESCAC in the top 10 for kills/set, and led our team in kills/set almost immediately as well. Her leadership, poise and court presence were felt right away, and maybe even started emanating from the sidelines in pre-season... Way to go, Becca!
In addition, Lizzy was named to the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team, which is very fitting for Lizzy. This honor is a great way to recognize her for being the great role model she is, and for promoting and advocating for greater sportsmanship not only in collegiate volleyball, but life itself. Congrats Lizzy! You are very deserving of this award! Lizzy also finished the season ranked 4th in NESCAC in digs/set, and was in the top 4 all season.
I'd also like to mention a couple of others that have been, or are still on the NESCAC leader board this season. This is quite an accomplishment given the tremendous talent that abounds in the NESCAC, so it's nice to recognize them here. We try not to place too much emphasis on stats during the season, but they can be a very good tool to use to evaluate and assess your skills sometimes and where you are relative to others. I want their focus on the process, not just the outcome, but at the end of the day, it's outcomes that get measured. Olivia was our kills leader for the first half of the season, and was consistently in the top 10 leader board for kills/set. Melanie was on the leader board most of the season, and ended it ranked 8th in both hitting %, and blocks/set, so congrats to both of them as well.

AVCA Academic Team Award Recipient for 2013
AVCA Breaks Another Record With 676 Teams Honored for Academic Excellence
LEXINGTON, Ky. (August 4, 2014) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced today that 676 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2012-2013 season. This number once again breaks the previous year's total of 623 and sets a new all-time high for this award.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
"Too often athletic participation is associated with academic underachievement and this stereotype is simply false when it comes to volleyball," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Couple the smarts represented by these teams with the competitive experience and team-focused training gained on the court and we have a potent formula for future leadership! What a significant contribution that is by their coaches and schools."
The AVCA Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA's fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients have increased every single year but one, while amassing an overall 500% increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 676.

Team Celebrates Season with Banquet at Swift House
All three Sophomores were Academic All-NESCAC, which is awesome! Well done guys! Then we took class pictures at the end, but Piper and Olivia had to leave early to take exams, so we didn't get a junior picture, but the other classes are below.

As usual for our group, the focus was on food, and togetherness, but we did have some nice gifts and recognitions to hand out. We handed out Varsity letters to the freshmen, (yes, the old-fashioned block letter that can be sewn onto a blanket, or something), and several people were honored with a NESCAC certificate for various things including 1st and 2nd Team, All-Sportsmanship, and All-Academic, which is great. The Team Awards, voted on by the players were the following: Most Improved went to Gabi; MCVB Spirit went to Kathryn; On-court Contribution went to Lizzy; Off-court Contribution went to Meg. Then, I always give the seniors a gift, and try to wrap up their careers by recognizing their amazing contributions, which is hard to do because they've given so much over the four years. It's really a time to celebrate our group together, and to thank the seniors for all they've given all of us over the last four years. We also recognize our Faculty Affiliate, Steve Oster, our team manager, Charlotte Wright, our trainer Judd Mackey, and Asst. Coach Brian Dunlop for all of their time, effort and dedication that makes the season happen. Plus the team had some nice gifts to hand out to both the seniors and to the coaches/trainers/Steve, and it was just a fun evening.
The last photo below was the seniors getting what could be their last FREE samples of cosmetic products from Brian! You can see they were focused on looking through the goody basket one last time. Thanks Brian!!
Now, we are starting finals, so everyone is busy studying and finishing up their work for the semester. Piper took everything early so she could leave to have surgery, but most everyone else is still around this week taking finals and finishing papers and projects.
We wish all the players good luck on their finals, and we'll have more updates soon as lots of things are happening right now--it's a very busy time of the year. We've had recruits accepted ED, poster presentations by players, and community service events, so stay tuned for more updates...

Team Celebrates Season with Banquet
The official reason for having our Banquet is to celebrate our season, but the "real" reason is to get together again and share food and friendship. Let's face it, we all love to eat and talk! It's a very busy time of the year for everyone, but it's nice to get back together as a team to celebrate our successes and efforts from the season.
Each year the players vote on our Team Awards, and the award winners this year were the following:
Contribution on the Court: Julia Gibbs--probably one of the most all-around, fundamentally sound players we've ever had--great recognition from her teammates for this award, and very deserving.
Contribution off Court: Meg Anderson--consistently very positive and hard-working regardless of score, side of the net in practice, whether playing or not in games. Meg has a wonderful perspective and is always enthusiastic--again, great recognition by her teammates for her special efforts.
MCVB Spirit: Nicki--two years in a row now, she may "define" the MCVB Spirit!! Bringing the spirit to practice, the bench, the court, the bus...gotta love the spirit!!
Most Improved: Kathryn was recognized for really stepping up as the season went on and when called upon to play in games, she shed any hesitations as a freshman and took control of our offense. She steadied our offense and the court, helping to propel us to the NESCAC Championship--well done!!
Captains for 2013: Meg, MJ, and Amy--a great combination of talents, on and off the court. I'm looking forward to working with these three, and am confident in and excited about their leadership abilities! For our SENIORS, this is truly the end, but just as "commencement" is the term for the graduation ceremony, this is their "beginning" of being an MCVB Alum! We'll do our best to keep track of them, and hopefully they'll follow us on-line next year from wherever they are! I want to recognize our four, fabulous seniors for their tremendous careers:
Sarah Studwell played very important roles throughout her career, and had the versatility and athleticism to play many different positions. She was mainly an outside, both front row and back, but also played as a back-up middle hitter, stepping in during a critical 5th game against Endicott last year (which we won!) She capped off her career with a fabulous senior season at OH/DS, and especially stepped up during the NESCAC Tournament and was brilliant! She was digging a ton of very hard hit balls right up to Kathryn, and served up 5 aces in the semifinal against Bowdoin. Great stuff, Stud!!
Julia Gibbs had a tremendous career, starting with being named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year her freshman year, and being named 2nd Team All-NESCAC each of the next three years. As we said above, she's one of the most all-around fundamentally sound players I've coached. Her versatility to step in and become our full-time setter last year, and lead us to the NCAA Regional Final was inspiring. This year, her cumulative stats were thrown off due to spending half the season setting before switching back to her original position of right side hitter. It was great to have her back in serve receive, and hitting from both the front row and the back. She was 2nd on the team in service aces, digs, assists, and reception percentage, and has also been recognized as an Honorable Mention All-American, and All-Region selection during her career! Wonderful job all-around, Julia!!
Maddie Firestone just kept getting better every year. From backwards footwork and a powerful arm swing her freshman year to a blocking machine her senior year--I loved every minute of working with Maddie "Rookie" Firestone. Maddie played a crucial role in our first NESCAC Championship run her sophomore year by stepping in for an injured Whitney Bean in the heart of our Nescac schedule during the regular season. We went on a tear during that stretch and narrowly missed hosting, but claimed the 2nd seed, and eventual Championship! Even when she stole Colby's camera tripod (by accident!) she managed to make us all smile with her. As a starter the past two years, Maddie was a consistent offensive force tying for 2nd on the team in hitting % among the hitters this past year. She capped off her career as a captain, showing great leadership and maturity--great stuff, Maddie!!
Caitlin Barrett came in as one of our "younger sisters"--she was part of the third set of sisters to play for me. Caitlin's competitive spirit, work ethic, and ability to dig and pass balls in places we could never tell her to be was amazing to witness. I'm not sure how many times I said to her, just go where YOU think the ball will be--you have free reign to wander...Her command of the backcourt and leadership on and off the court helped set the tone for the team and was a huge reason for our success. In addition to absolutely single handedly saving tons of rallies from ending by getting her body under balls that were practically (but not quite) down on the ground, leading her to be named Defensive Player of the Year in NESCAC. Amazing career, Caitlin!!
As a class, these seniors won 2 NESCAC Championships, had a combined record of 91-28 over their four years, had four 20-win seasons, advanced to the NCAA's three straight years, making it to the Regional Finals once, and the semi-finals twice. They've been awarded the Team Academic Award by both the NEWVA and the AVCA every year, and all four have been Academic All-NESCAC! I'm not sure we've ever had such a power-packed senior class, so thank you all for all of your efforts, and for all you've given to the MCVB Program!!
Now, for our captains this year: First, as a junior Captain, MJ did a fantastic job of leading by example with her competitiveness both in practice and in games. Her no-nonsense determination set a steady example, and she was a quiet force on the court. She could change the energy with one show-stopping powerful kill that as a freshman would have elicited a look like, "whaaaat???" which now was a "Lets GO!" inspiration to the team. Thank you, MJ!
Maddie always had the youthful exuberance that probably led to her nickname of "Rookie!" She would bound on and off the court as middles exchanges with the libero, immediately energizing the floor and bench respectively. When she stuffed an opposing middle at key times, her reaction inspired the team with confidence and propelled us on to victory! She was an approachable leader, a good listener, and a good communicator, adding up to be a fabulous captain. Thank you, Maddie!
Caitlin was the consummate floor leader. She was always talking, and communicating on the court, and kept the energy alive just like she kept balls alive in the back court. She's been our anchor on defense for three solid years now, and provided an extremely solid base of leadership on and off the court, and was a wonderful liaison between the players and the coaching staff. Thank you, Caitlin!

The other people we wanted to recognize were those not in uniform for us, but still a huge part of our Team: Rachel, Steve and Max! Rachel keeps the team all patched up, and healthy, and unfortunately, we tend to spend a lot of time down there. I keep telling them to hang out with Rachel "socially," not "professionally!" Thank you, Rachel! Steve keeps our academic lives in tact, and helps smooth out any issues in that arena that sometimes can be a little sticky, not to mention being a great fan along with his family! Thank you, Steve! And, Max keeps us organized in practice, and on the road by keeping score, taking stats, tossing balls--she's a jack-of-all-trades on the team, and is a huge help to me, and a wonderful friend and important Teammate! Thank you, Max!
In addition to all of this, and in many ways one of the most important awards that can be given out at a school like Middlebury is the Academic All-NESCAC award! Only sophomores and up are eligible for this award, so of our 11 players that were eligible, 8 received this award, which is amazing, and a tribute to the caliber of student-athlete that we have on our Team. The following were awarded this nice honor:
Lizzy
Olivia
Nicki
Meg
Caitlin
Julia
Stud
Maddie
Way to go, TEAM!! Thank you all for sharing the season, and the evening. Good luck with all your work as the last week of classes comes to an end, and good luck on Finals next week! As the juniors all head abroad, the sophomores will take over the organization of any off-season activities, and my guess is that the seniors will still want to play when possible!

Banquet at Sweet Maries!
What a special way to end our season. Sweet Maries, a new restaurant in town, agreed to open on a Sunday, just for us. There was a cute sign put on the door that said "Closed for Private Party: MIDD Women's Volleyball Team." It was a nice time for us to come together again, and for the players to get a brief reprieve from work. Rachel couldn't make it because she was doing some professional development in Boston, but Steve and Brian and I were there as well as Max, our manager extraordinaire. I'd also like to say a very special THANK YOU to Piper's parents, who were so generous as to provide this special dinner for us from afar.
After a delicious dinner, we celebrated our season once again by handing out our many awards and honors won during the season. The freshmen actually receive an "old fashioned" M that can be sewn onto a blanket, sweater, jacket etc, although I'm not sure anyone actually does anything with them any more?! In addition, everyone receives a certificate from Middlebury College. Then, we had several All-NESCAC certificates to hand out, which is always nice!
The Team Awards voted on this year were Contribution On Court, Contribution Off Court, MCVB Spirit, and then Brian and I gave a Coaches' Award. Those recipients were:
Contribution On-Court--MJ
Contribution Off-Court--Nicki
MCVB Spirit--Elissa
Coaches' Award--Meg
It was a really fun evening, and it's always sad to say good-bye to our seniors, but what a lasting mark they've made on MCVB. As I told the group, I think that Jane and Elissa actually coined the phrase, "MCVB" which could last forever now?! Also, those two were instrumental in the evolution of the Program into what it has become now.
Midd VB has seen a few waves of success over our history, but this most recent wave was started with the combination of Lauren Barrett along with Jane and Elissa. Having Lauren's leadership as our setter for four years was key. In her second year, Jane and Elissa arrived as freshmen, and we followed that up with Julia, Caitlin, Maddie and Stud. Then came our sophomores, and now our freshmen class. It's an evolutionary process, but maintaining the consistency of the high caliber of player we have now throughout the team will be the key factor. It's the depth of talent as much as anything that leads to sustained success.
Jane and Elissa have been here through it all and feel ownership of the Program and where we've come from, and where we're headed. As the coach, that's exactly what I want: for players to feel the ownership of the Program. Hopefully means that they'll stay in touch with us, and keep tabs on us, and really cement the longevity of the impact of being a part of something much bigger than oneself! I see this commitment with alums writing back saying how proud they are to have been a part of MIDD Volleyball, and that's been really great to hear on so many levels. And, it's fun to have them stay in touch.
That's what I love to see happen, and it's the consistency that we're going for--that lasting tradition for MCVB. Hopefully this Blog will help all our alums keep track of us, and share in our common enjoyment of the fun of playing volleyball at Middlebury. It may also attract new recruits who see/read how much FUN we have together! :)
With that, I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday, and are getting the New Year started off on a good note! Our next posts could be updates from our Juniors who are going abroad, or some alumni news....stay tuned.

MIDD "Queens" of Senior Classic
Jane and Elissa were invited to play in the NEWVA Senior Classic by being honored as two of the top 30 seniors in New England. That day was this past Sunday. They took to the court one last time together as over 25 young women competed in different skill games, and then competed in an actual match. I think they may not have come out on the winning team for the match, but they did come away with a nice honor. Jane and Elissa placed #1 and #2 in the Queen of the Court competition! How fun! Well done, guys. They scored it how we sometimes do in practice where you end up competing on many different teams, but the individuals with the most points scored on the "Queen" side win.
It was a very nice event, and a nice culmination of a career playing against many of these girls. They didn't know all of the girls, but many of them they'd played against at least once, and several many times.
